Our pets aren’t just animals; they’re cherished members of our families. When a pet emergency arises, the stress and urgency can rival that of any human medical issue. Knowing what defines a pet emergency, how to manage it, and where to find assistance during both business hours and after-hours are essential for the welfare of your furry friend.

We handle pet emergencies on a case-by-case basis and by appointment. Kindly reach out to us at 760- 491-1008 to see if we can accommodate your pet with a same-day appointment.

If we’re unable to attend to your pet, we’ll direct you to the closest emergency pet hospital. For more information, please review the “After Hours Emergency Care” section below.

If your pet is experiencing a medical emergency and we’re unable to accommodate them on the same day, or we are closed, please take them to one of the following urgent veterinary care or 24-hour facilities for immediate care.

What is a Pet Emergency?

Pet emergencies can range from obvious situations, like a car accident, to more subtle conditions that require immediate attention. As a pet owner, it’s important to recognize the signs that your pet needs emergency care.

Recognizing the Signs

Here are some, but not all, common indications of a pet emergency:
  • Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn’t stop within five minutes
  • Choking, difficulty breathing, or nonstop coughing and gagging
  • Seizures and/or staggering
  • Fractured bones, severe lameness, or an inability to move legs
  • Inappetence or significant lethargy
  • Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
  • Heatstroke or hypothermia
  • Vomiting or diarrhea containing blood
  • Unconsciousness

Less Obvious Signs

Some emergencies may not be immediately obvious. Here are some, but not all, less apparent signs that your pet needs urgent care:
  • Unusual or unexplained swelling
  • Pale gums or jaundice
  • Rapid weight loss or gain
  • Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
Being aware of your pet’s normal behavior can help you recognize when something is off. If you notice a sudden change in behavior or physical condition, it’s best to consult with a veterinarian immediately.

Poison Control

If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, please call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC)* at 888-426-4435 right away. The APCC is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
